2024 NAACP Image Awards Winners (Updating)

UPDATED with Thursday winners: Abbott Elementary was named Outstanding Comedy Series and Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story was named Outstanding Drama Series on Thursday night as the NAACP Image Awards continued its weeklong awards-giving honoring Black excellence in entertainment.

The non-televised ceremony at the Hollywood Palladium was hosted by Sherri Shepherd, and comes ahead of Saturday’s main 55th NAACP Image Awards, hosted by Queen Latifah and airing live on BET and CBS as well as across parent Paramount Global’s networks including BET Her, VH1, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV, MTV2, Paramount Network, Pop, Smithsonian Channel and TV Land.

That ceremony will include a newly announced honor, with Entertainer of the Year nominee Usher set to receive the President’s Award, organizers said Friday.

Among the winners last night were Ava DuVernay, for directing Origin, and Cord Jefferson, who repeated his Oscar win for his American Fiction screenplay; both are up for Outstanding Motion Picture on Saturday. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was named best animated film, while Brother was named best international movie. Creed III‘s Mila Davis-Kent won for Outstanding Youth Performance in a motion picture.

In the TV categories, Shepherd won for Outstanding Talk Host, while The Jennifer Hudson Show won Outstanding Talk Show. Swarm won for best TV movie, limited series or dramatic special. Other winners included The Bear‘s Ayo Edebiri, Chloe Bailey, Keith Powers, Phylicia Rashad and Don Cheadle.

Earlier this week, The Color Purple was among the movies picking up multiple awards, taking the Ensemble Cast prize along with Breakthrough Creative for director Blitz Bazawule and Outstanding Soundtrack.

Other notable early-week winners in TV included HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show was named Outstanding Variety Show, DC Young Fly of Celebrity Squares was named Outstanding Host and Issa Rae of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse won for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance.

On Monday, Image Awards were bestowed in the music and books categories, with winners including Usher, H.E.R., Megan Thee Stallion, Ciara, Kirk Franklin and Tems. Victoria Monét and Chris Brown were double winners.

Usher is also up for Saturday’s marquee Entertainer of the Year in a category that also includes Keke Palmer, Oscar Best Actor nominee Colman Domingo, Fantasia Barrino and Halle Bailey.
