The Gotham Film & Media Institute, the group behind the annual film-centric Gotham Awards, on Thursday took the wraps off of the Gotham TV Awards. The inaugural ceremony will take place June 4, 2024 in New York City.
The awards will honor outstanding TV series and performances and celebrate industry icons, and are launching with eight categories: Breakthrough Comedy Series, Breakthrough Drama Series, Breakthrough Limited Series, Breakthrough Nonfiction Series, Outstanding Performance in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series, Outstanding Performance in a Limited Series and an Audience Award.
Submissions will open April 15 and close April 29, with nominations to be selected by committees of critics, journalists, programmers and curators and revealed May 16. Separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others will determine the final winners.
The Gotham Awards previously honored winners in three TV categories — Breakthrough Series (Over 40 minutes), Breakthrough Series (Under 40 minutes), and Outstanding Performance in a New Series — won this year by A Small Light, Beef and Beef‘s Ali Wong, respectively. They no longer will be part of that awards show, which annually serves and the unofficial kickoff off the film-awards season in late November.
“We are proud of our legacy in recognizing the creative community in film and TV, and we have come to recognize that our TV awards could have even greater impact.,” Gotham executive director Jeffrey Sharp said. “We sense a unique opportunity to widen our reach by expanding our competitive categories and tributes in a show focused solely on creators of episodic TV, limited series, and non-theatrical streaming movies.”
