‘Bookie’ Co-Creator Nick Bakay Teases Return Of Charlie Sheen

Bookie returns to Max December 12 with a familiar face and the appearance of two TV comedy vets who were recruited to help spice up the action around the sports betting world.

Charlie Sheen is back to play himself in the second season of the Sebastian Maniscalco comedy, which follows bookie Danny (Maniscalco) as he and his partner, former NFL star Ray (Omar J. Dorsey), romp around Los Angeles trying to keep their illegal sports betting operation in play. The eight-episode second season will lead up to the season finale on Thursday, January 30.

“Charlie was such a home run for us in season one, we thought we’d extend the metaphor a little,” Nick Bakay, who co-created the comedy with Chuck Lorre, tells Deadline. “I don’t want to spoil things, but I refer to his arrival this season as Deus Ex Sheen. He is forever a part of the Bookie family.”

Also joining the ensemble is Everybody Loves Raymond‘s Brad Garrett, who Bakay says “is a perfect example of one of the unique aspects of our show. Since Sebastian and Omar are Bookies plying their trade in contemporary L.A., it’s organic that they would have some celebrity clients. The next step is finding people who are willing to have fun with that premise, and themselves, which Brad did and crushed it for us.”

Easy peasy, apparently: The season 2 trailer also shows appearances by Ray Romano and Ghosts‘ Asher Grodman.

Zach Braff (Scrubs) also signed up for season two after paying “us the ultimate compliment by reaching out after season one and letting us know how much he enjoyed Bookie.”

“The timing was kinda perfect as Chuck and I were in the midst of cooking up scripts, and we tailored an over-the-top tout selling NFL picks with a crazy rap for him, one of those guys who promises he has a 90% win rate and guarantees you the good life,” continues Bakay. “Needless to say, that was a particularly fun day on set.”

Bakay admits it’s been an embarrassment of riches when it comes to possible guest stars on the comedy that also stars Andrea Anders, Maxim Swinton, Jorge Garcia, Rob Corddry and Paul Ben-Victor.

“I will say, after the show came out, every time we were out promoting it at industry events, we kept hearing positive stuff from lots of people,” explains Bakay. “We turned into a couple college coaches on a recruiting trip [and said] ‘any interest in being down a hundred grand for us next season?’”

Created, written, and produced by Lorre and Bakay, Bookie is produced by Warner Bros. Television. It’s executive produced by Maniscalco, Judi Marmel, and Andy Tennant, who directed multiple episodes.
