Girls Will Be Girls: Ali Fazal and Richa Chadha reveal what pushed them into turning producers [Exclusive]

Ali Fazal and Richa Chadha are both terrific actors who have awed audiences with their consistent performances. While Ali is known for his role of Guddu Bhaiyya in Mirzapur and his much-appreciated Hollywood outing Victoria & Abdul; Richa proved her mettle as an actor right from Gangs Of Wasseypur, Masaan and the recent Heeramandi. But the two are not just actors anymore. They have transitioned into producers and their first film from their production house Pushing Button is now out on Amazon Prime Video. Girls Will Be Girls was shown at various festivals around the world and has already left the global audience in awe with the heartwarming storytelling and earnest performances by debutants Kesav Rao and Preeti Panigrahi, along with the prolific actress Kani Kasruti. One would be quick to conclude that for actors with such an amazing body of work, there would be no dearth of creative satisfaction. So, what was it that actually pushed Ali and Richa towards starting their own production company? Smrity Sharma sat down with the producers of Girls Will Be Girls to figure this out. Recalling the first nudge, Ali said, “What drove us to this decision is to make cinema that we have watched. At least try and get there. My problem with a lot of cinema that I am part of is we don’t break form so it gets a little monotonous. And there are some amazing stories that are already there in scriptures, written and spoken about in our history and cultures. So, we just need people who can piece all of this together.” Also Read – ‘Most exhilarating experience…’, Amitabh Bachchan pens his feelings about granddaughter Aaradhya’s annual day performance

Talking about her own experience of turning producer, Richa shared, “When you are acting, it is not possible to be in control of everything. But when we are producers, we have the power to decide, which and what kind of actors we would like to work with, whether they would come through auditions or just be chosen randomly. These are some things you can control as a producer, there is more creative control.” Also Read – Rishab Shetty reveals how his movie Kantara turned his village into a cinematic landmark

The actor-turned-producers hope to tell more heartwarming stories and make unconventional content, which is also entertaining, across formats. For now, watch Girls Will Be Girls on Prime Video.
