Marissa Jo Cerar Family Drama ‘Birthright’ In Works At Netflix

EXCLUSIVE: Birthright, a soapy family drama project from Women of the Movement and Black Cake creator Marissa Jo Cerar, has landed at Netflix in a competitive situation with a significant development deal, Deadline has learned. Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, where Cerar is under an overall deal, is the studio.

In Birthright, written by Cerar, journalist Maya James is stunned when she is made heir to one of the largest and most profitable liquor businesses in America, but it’s a gift that upends her life as she uncovers the many secrets buried by her benefactors.

Cerar executive produces with Kapital’s Kaplan, Brian Morewitz and head of production Michael Lohmann.

This marks the third major project for Cerar under her deal at Kapital, following Women of the Movement, which ran on ABC in 2022, and Black Cake, which premiere on Hulu in November. The latter’s fate is yet to be officially confirmed by the Disney streamer.

This marks a return to Netflix for Cerar who worked on the global streamer’s series 13 Reasons Why. Her previous credits also include Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Freeform’s The Fosters and Fox’s Shots Fired. Cerar is repped by CAA, Heroes and Villains Entertainment, and attorney Kim Stenton at Myman Greenspan. For Kapital, the deal was negotiated by Traci Myman.
