Continuing to ride a wave, Disney’s Moana 2 has crested the $800M global mark. With $804M through Monday, it is now the No. 4 studio movie of the year to date globally. The international box office portion of that is $440.6M.
The sequel is also the No. 4 domestic and international release of the year (surpassing Despicable Me 4 and Dune: Part Two respectively).
Does it get to $1B? That’s still in the balance.
The Top 5 on Moana 2 so far are France ($47.9M), UK ($38.6M), Germany ($29.8M), Mexico ($26.6M) and Brazil ($24.4M).
As we reported on Sunday, Dis passed $5B global box office for the year – the first time a studio has done so since the start of the pandemic. Domestically, Disney now holds three of the top four films of 2024, including the Top 2 animated movies (Inside Out 2 and Moana 2), and three of the top four films internationally and globally (with Deadpool & Wolverine).
Meanwhile, although it came in way off of our pre-weekend projections, Mufasa: The Lion King ended up higher in the Sunday actuals with $125.6M global (including $90.2M from international).
On Monday, Mufasa added another $22M overseas, lifting the worldwide cume to $147M ahead of holiday play.
For Mufasa, the Top 5 overseas markets so far are: France ($10.3M), Mexico ($8.5M), China ($8.2M), UK ($7.2M) and Germany ($6.2M).
