Nisha Ganatra In Talks To Direct; Curtis, Lohan Negotiating

Disney’s long-discussed Freaky Friday sequel has found its director in Nisha Ganatra (Late Night), with the original film’s stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in talks to return, Deadline can confirm.

No word yet on the plot of the new film, but it’s said to be targeting a summer shoot in Los Angeles. Jordan Weiss wrote the script, with the original’s Andrew Gunn to produce alongside Kristin Burr. Whether the film will be for theaters or streaming isn’t yet clear.

Released in 2003, Freaky Friday revolves around Tess Coleman (Curtis), a single mother and uptight psychiatrist, and her rebellious teenage daughter, Anna (Lohan). Constantly at odds with each other due to their differing perspectives on life, they find themselves magically swapping bodies after a mysterious fortune cookie incident at a Chinese restaurant. As Tess wakes up in Anna’s body and vice versa, they are forced to live each other’s lives for a day.

Pic’s based on the same-name children’s book by Mary Rodgers, which was previously adapted into a 1976 film starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster as mother and daughter.

Previously helming Amazon’s Late Night, starring Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson, as well as the romantic drama The High Note, with Dakota Johnson and Tracee Ellis Ross, Ganatra’s TV credits include Welcome to Chippendales, And Just Like That…, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, to name just a few.

Curtis is coming off of her first Oscar win for her supporting role in A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, whereas Lohan has been back in the spotlight of late with popular Netflix com-coms like Irish Wish.

The Hollywood Reporter was first to the news of Ganatra’s Freaky Friday attachment.
