Refresh for latest… The elongated 2023-24 awards season wraps tonight as the WGA presents its strike-delayed 2024 Writers Guild Awards in simultaneous ceremonies on both coasts. Deadline is posting the winners live as they are revealed; see the running list below.
Cord Jefferson took the first award of the night, following up his Adapted Screenplay Oscar win for Amazon MGM’s American Fiction.
On the small screen, Beef completed its awards-season sweep with a win for Limited Series. The FX program earlier grabbed trophies from the Emmys, SAG Awards, Golden Globes and Critics Choice.
The WGA Award for New Series went to HBO’s The Last of Us, written by Neil Druckmann, Halley Gross, Craig Mazin and Bo Shim. Fox’s The Simpsons again won the Animation prize, this time for the episode “Carl Carlson Rides Again,” penned by Loni Steele Sosthand.
It’s been a weird, wild and wacky award season for the Writers Guild of America, with its nearly five-month strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers throwing everything for a loop. The Oscars came and went last month, leaving the WGA as the last entity to present 2023-24 awards.
Reminder that the Academy Awards handed its Original Screenplay to Justine Triet and Arthur Harari for Anatomy of a Fall. That script, however, isn’t eligible for a Writers Guild Award because, unlike other guilds, the WGA deems ineligible any scripts for movies not produced under its Minimum Basic Agreement or a bona fide collective bargaining agreement with various affiliated countries.

The guild is presenting a slew of other honors and tributes tonight. Chris Keyser and David A. Goodman picked up the the WGA West‘s Morgan Cox Award, and WGAW will present its highest honor — the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement — to Designing Women and Evening Shade creator Linda Bloodworth Thomason. It also will present its Laurel Award for lifetime achievement to Walter Hill, who wrote and/or directed and produced such films as 48 Hrs., The Warriors, The Getaway and many more.
The WGA East is set to honor Wanda Sykes with its Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence, and Philadelphia scribe Ron Nyswaner will receive its Walter Bernstein Award. WGAE’s Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement will go to Tony Gilroy.
Niecy Nash-Betts is hosting the Los Angeles ceremony at the Hollywood Palladium, and Josh Gondelman is emcee for the New York show at Edison Ballroom in Manhattan.
Here are the winners announced so far at the 2024 Writers Guild Awards, followed by the remaining nominees:
